National Geographic Young Explorer is a magazine designed specifically for kindergarten and first grade students. Children can listen to the magazine being read to them as they follow along with the highlighted text.
This lesson challenges students' views of Native Americans as a vanished people by asking them to compare their prior knowledge with information they gather while reading about contemporary Native Americans.
Canadian Teachers of grades 4-11 classes can find free, downloadable, printable Teachers’ Resource Kits (TRK’s). These materials are usable as is or customizable for printing and use in the classroom, and include lesson plans, reference to background materials, in-class exercises, quizzes, and grading rubrics.

Nature Companion is a free app and website that provides students with interesting and easy-to-understand information about plants, trees, birds, animals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians found in Canada’s four western provinces.
Each short description includes colourful photographs and a Did you know? section with fun facts about each species. Scroll through the colourful photographs and short descriptions to find out more about nature in your schoolyard or community. The tool is available on or offline and is a great way to connect kids with nature.
Students whose first language is not English reflect on nature through readings, a visit to a green area, and bookmaking using the writing process and peer feedback.

As part of the ELA theme Chocolate students were asked to think about
how new products are developed. They brainstormed new chocolate products and
then selected their best idea to continue. Each student was asked to create a
marketing plan, radio or TV ads, as well as print ads promoting their products.
How it demonstrates Creativity? I followed the 6 Phases of Creativity from the
Learning Together Booklet. Students were told the basic framework for the
assignment, but they were given total freedom for selecting the product and
designing the elements of the assignment. They did several brainstorming tasks
along the way to help them refine their ideas.
"The Newbery Medal was first offered in 1921 by Fredric G. Melcher as an incentive for better quality in children's books. Named after John Newbery, the famous 18th-century publisher and seller of children's books, it is now donated annually by the Melcher family and awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. It is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published during the preceding year.
From the beginning of the awarding of the Newbery Medal, committees could, and usually did, cite other books as worthy of attention. Such books were referred to as Newbery "runners-up." In 1971 the term "runners-up" was changed to "honor books." The new terminology was made retroactive so that all former runners-up are now referred to as Newbery Honor Books. These are cited here as Nominees."
