Supporting First Nations, Métis and Inuit Youth to make Positive Changes in
their Communities: A Guide for Educators and Youth Program Facilitators

Students will learn ‘through’ the development and implementation of their action projects, rather
than ‘about’ action.

Action projects develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are central to many youth
programs. Action projects:
• develop communication skills
• foster critical thinking skills
• promote leadership skills
• help young people to identify things that are important to them and support them to think
through the process required to make positive change
• offer opportunities for young people to experience meaningful success
• offer youth an opportunity to learn about and understand FNMI spiritual teachings, including
the teaching that all living beings have a Spirit

A teacher’s guide from the 2022 Treaty Education Summer Institute which uses storytelling as a portal to explore Treaties.

"This learning module is designed to help teachers and other educational professionals become comfortable with the topic of reconciliation so that they can begin incorporating this important topic into their work with their students.

Treaties and the Treaty Relationship
The Canada’s History Treaties issue features guest editor Treaty Commissioner Loretta Rosslink opens in new window from the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba.

Contributing writers, from throughout Canada, have shared their insights and knowledge on a wide variety of aspects of Treaty history and the Treaty Relationship.

As Commissioner Ross states in her Forward: “For too long, Canadians have learned about Treaties with First Nations from a singular, non-First Nations perspective. The goal of this special issue is to try to provide a more balanced understanding of Treaties and the Treaty relationship.”

 On August 30, 2022, a Flag Ceremony was held at the Sun West Learning Centre in Rosetown to welcome the Treaty 6, Treaty 4 and Métis Nation flags to Sun West School Division. Welcoming the flags to the Sun West Learning Centre, which is directly adjacent to the Sun West Division Office, recognizes that Sun West is on Treaty territory as well as the School Division’s commitment to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in particular those that relate to education.  The Flag Ceremony was held in conjunction with the first Sun West Administrators Meeting (Principals and Vice-Principals) of the 2022-23 school year and so the Administrators of all of Sun West’s schools participated. Most Sun West schools are within Treaty 6 Territory except for Davidson and Loreburn Central Schools that are in Treaty 4 Territory. The entire school division falls within the Métis Nation Homeland.   

TREATY VOCABULARY
The following is a list of words to help students understand the concept of the Treaty
relationship. Using the words and the sentences provided, have students explore and express
their understandings in the blank area. They may be instructed to write their understanding
of the sentence, to draw a picture or symbolic representation, and/or write or draw their own
analogies or metaphors. Encourage the students to share their work with each other.

This amazing resource looks at FNME from grades 1 to 9 with an inquiry approach. The key questions are examined for the grades including treaty relationships, spirit and intent, historical context, and treaty promises and provisions.

As a teacher, we know that you are extremely busy. To assist in the delivery process, we have a batch of PowerPoint documents that are available and ready for you to use. You can use these while teaching about Treaties in their classroom, providing an in-service to your colleagues, or to further your own Treaty knowledge. We hope you find these PowerPoint and additional resources valuable and we will continue to grow these resources for educators.

Saskatchewan has a Treaty history that has led us to the Treaty relationship we have today. The OTC Treaty Timeline below is a great way to learn more about that history.

This package is intended for Grade 7 students and covers the Treaty Education outcomes for this grade level. Through this resource, students will come to better understand treaties, their history and impact on our country, how they continue to affect Indigenous people in Canada, and how we are all treaty people.

Episode Three: Gaamiinigooyang – “That Which Is Given To Us” describes the traditional Ojibwe survival system through numerous interviews with historians, tribal leaders, and elders; combined with visually stunning dramatic sequences of the four seasons’ traditional economic cycle. Key interviews are powerfully illustrated with archival photographs, documents, maps, and historical film footage.

Travel from the times before contact, through the Fur Trade period, which introduced European concepts of personal profit, land ownership, and debt. This episode traces the damaging effects of treaties and land loss on the very survival of the Ojibwe; the economic reforms of the 1960s and 70’s self-determination; and contemporary court decisions which have re-affirmed reserved rights to practice traditional hunting, fishing, and gathering. Many of today’s Ojibwe people are experiencing a renewed economic sovereignty through new sources of financial stability including gaming, tribal businesses, and individual entrepreneurship.
