Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong - A must for any teacher!
Rating
0.0 stars

This podcast is highly recommended to anyone that teaches children of any age.

"There's an idea about how children learn to read that's held sway in schools for more than a generation — even though it was proven wrong by cognitive scientists decades ago. Teaching methods based on this idea can make it harder for children to learn how to read. In this podcast, host Emily Hanford investigates the influential authors who promote this idea and the company that sells their work. It's an exposé of how educators came to believe in something that isn't true and are now reckoning with the consequences — children harmed, money wasted, an education system upended."

Somebody Wanted But So (SWBS) Chart Make Your Own Reusable Chart
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Somebody...Wanted...But...So.... is a predictable plot structure in fiction and narrative non-fiction stories. It a reading comprehension strategy which helps students understand the WHO, WHAT, WHY & HOW of a text in the following way....

a character or person....
is trying to do something....
but can't (yet) for one reason or another....
until something happens and they can do what they want to do.

Here is a fiction example:

The wolf...
wants some sugar..
but the pigs won't give it to him...
so, he blows them away.

Here's a non-fiction example:

Rosa Parks...
wants to sit on her seat in the bus...
but the bus driver tells her move to the back of the bus...
so she refuses to give up her seat...
then she got arrested which started a civil rights movement.

You supply the tag board and the stories and I supply the rest. Create this colorful eye-catching SWBS or SWBST chart once, and can re-use it again and again with your guided reading groups or with any group reading lesson. Sticky notes are are also helpful. You can prewrite what gets written on the sticky notes ahead of time or compose it together with your students.

South African Milk Tart
Rating

Here is a recipe of a very traditional South African tea time or desert treat.

The crust can be made with any biscuits you like and melted butter. One recommendation is to use digestive biscuits with a teaspoon of sugar and melted butter. Sometimes, people substitute some of the milk in this recipe with condensed milk (if they like the extra sweetness).

Starfall - Kids Games, Movies, & Books K-3
Rating
0.0 stars

At Starfall, children have fun while they learn.
Starfall.com® opened in September 2002 as a free public service to teach children to read. Since then it has expanded to include language arts and mathematics for preschool, kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade. Starfall’s emphasis on phonemic awareness, systematic sequential phonics, and common sight words in conjunction with audiovisual interactivity has proven effective in teaching emergent readers. Starfall activities are research-based and align with Individual and Common Core State Standards in English language arts and mathematics.
The program emphasizes exploration, play, and positive reinforcement—encouraging children to become confident and intrinsically motivated. Starfall is an educational alternative to other entertainment choices for children and is especially effective for special education, homeschooling, and English language development (ELD, ELL, ESL). It is widely used in schools that serve children with special needs and learning difficulties.
Our low-cost membership program expands the free content to include animated songs, mathematics, and reading activities spanning K-3. Membership also supports the production of new interactive games, movies, and more for both the Starfall.com website and Starfall apps for mobile devices.

The Starfall reading program is designed to be fun, exciting, and to instill confidence in young children as they learn to read. The website and companion printed materials are clear and effective tools to help you implement proven teaching methods. Our website was created by carefully observing the way children learn using a computer. The Starfall Website is easy for students to navigate independently, but it is not intended as a surrogate for the teacher.

Primarily designed for first grade, Starfall is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and second grade.
