My action plan is currently focusing on including questions for deeper understanding (Blooms Taxonomy) in both Science and ELA 8. I wanted to also focus on using the 6 Thinking Hats of Debono alongside Blooms Taxonomy question in ELA to guide but not direct discussion on specific topics (Black Negative, Yellow Positive, Blue control, etc.) as well as integrating basic technology into PE games (Heart rate monitors, mileage/stepper counters during activity to measure distance covered, etc.) with a focus on eventually using more in depth tech in PE (QR codes, etc.)

"I’ve listed 100+ PBL ideas below to help get you started on the project-based learning journey. The ideas below that are hyperlinked will send you to the project that is already developed. Those that are not yet hyperlinked are some of our ideas for future projects. I can’t wait to share them out when they are finished. In the meantime, use them to get inspired and give you some ideas to start PBL with your students."
Project ideas are organized by Education Level, and the High School ideas are further organized by subject.

For my artifact, I incorporated literature circles into the reading of the novel, Lord of the Flies. The first step in this process was to introduce the roles to the students and to explain what was expected of them. Then, I split the students into their groups of four using a random group generator (groups can be adjusted based on numbers, but four worked best in my class). Once students knew what was expected of them, they talked with their group members to determine who was doing what role for the first two chapters. From there, we would read two chapters and I would allow the students time to complete their role sheet (I also encouraged them to do this as they were reading along, especially for quotes and vocab) and then they would meet with their group to share their role with the other members. As the teacher, I would circulate between the groups while they were sharing to listen to them and to provide any input/clarifications. We would then repeat this process after each two chapters (there are 12 chapters in total in the novel).

"Participating classes will explore how indoor environmental conditions influence human health, and identify the best conditions for healthy living. This knowledge is important not only on Earth, but also on the International Space Station (ISS), the future Lunar Gateway, and as long-duration space travel progresses, maybe even on Mars!"
"Students and educators will study the key environmental conditions that are monitored and managed to keep astronauts healthy on the ISS. Students will measure environmental conditions such as temperature, CO2, and relative humidity in their classroom and submit the data to a national database. After developing their understanding of optimal ranges, and collecting data on their current environment, students will make a plan for classroom environmental improvement. The national Living Space database allows students to compare their classroom data with information from other participating classrooms in Canada as well as data from the ISS!"

Students will explore the transmission of folktales over time and continent to evaluate their validity of a literary genre. By reading and analyzing a variety of folktales, students will realize the cultural implications of the genre. Students will create and perform their own original folktale in the form of a script that combines and modernizes the tales that they read. Learning will enhanced by technology infusion and the incorporation of 21 Century learning competencies.

"Office Lens trims, enhances, and makes pictures of whiteboards and docs readable. You can use Office Lens to convert images to PDF, Word and PowerPoint files, and you can even save images to OneNote or OneDrive.
Office Lens is like having a scanner in your pocket. Like magic, it will digitize notes from whiteboards or blackboards. Always find important documents or business cards. Sketch your ideas and snap a picture for later. Don't lose receipts or stray sticky notes again!"
This can convert handwriting to text (including chemical equations)!
Sun West teachers can add this from the app catalog. Contact your school's Tech Coach if you need assistance.

*For every unit in Math I gave students a problem that did not have one right answer, but many possible answers. *Students were given a question on Monday and given time to research information over the week. *On Friday, the students were put into groups to discuss their findings. As a group they needed to decide what information did they think made the best sense to use for the problem. *The group presented their answer to the class and explained why their group chose to answer the question in the way that they did.

The Cupcake Color Wheel activity provides a meaningful, memorable way for students to study Color Theory. Used in my Practical and Applied Arts 10- Survey class, it is part of the Interior Design module. Through this activity, students learn color terminology, mixing colors, and gain knowledge and understanding in the concepts of complementary colors, values, and chroma. If this activity is completed as part of a Food Studies class, it provides students an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in the kitchen basics, and in the preparation of cakes and frostings.

All the students in our school have iPads and I recently had received 2 LEGO robotics kits; I wanted to find a way to mesh the two together. LEGO has a free app (for iPads only) that allows students to program their robot and connect to it via Bluetooth. The goal of this assignment is to learn about basic function of the LEGO EV3 robot. This includes the motor, color sensor and ultrasonic sensor. The main objective is to learn how to program, or "code", the robot to perform various functions using the "LEGO Mindstorms Programming App".

Socially-based Curriculum Unit
In this unit developed for NAC1O (Expressing Aboriginal Culture), students create a collaborative art piece that expresses Aboriginal identity in a variety of areas. The collaborative art piece consists of many individual pieces of art that form together to form the word “pride.” Each letter has a group assigned to it, and each letter is assigned a theme/idea (ie. clanship, land claims, traditional teachings, community activities, etc) that is researched and then expressed in the artwork of each letter and presented to the class.
Students are provided with an opportunity to discover why Aboriginal peoples identify and are concerned with certain social and political issues. They are also given the opportunity to research an assigned topic, express themselves creatively, work in a group setting, discuss salient issues, and present to their peers. The project also fosters a sense of classroom unity via large group collaboration.
