Students use a simple pH indicator to measure how much CO2 is produced during respiration, at rest and after exercising. They begin by comparing some common household solutions in order to determine the color change of the indicator. They review the concepts of pH and respiration and extend their knowledge to measuring the effectiveness of bioremediation in the environment.

CELLS alive! represents 30 years of capturing film and computer-enhanced images of living cells and organisms for education and medical research. The site has been available continuously and updated annually since May of 1994 and now hosts over 4 million visitors a year. All text, images, and layout are provided by me, Jim Sullivan. Every effort has been made to minimize errors or typos, but any you find on these pages are my doing as well.
The majority of the site is free of cost and registration for anyone with internet access. With up to 45,000 visitors a day during the school year, hosting costs are an issue. Students and teachers who purchase downloads for classroom use make this possible.

Exploring “renewal” and “regeneration” through a holistic perspective, this project presents these concepts through the lens of sustainability. Students make connections to these concepts in the classroom and on the land. Whether they are exploring the impact of fires and controlled burns on the ecosystem or considering ways to regenerate and heal from trauma, students will have the opportunity to consider the many ways that people and the environment can rejuvenate in the wake of real or perceived destruction. In this folder, you will find:1. Teacher Overview2. Science Unit Plan3. Art Extension Unit4. ELA Extention Unit5. Outdoor Education Extension Unit6. Health Extension Unit7. Indigenous Perspectives Extension Unit

Real science, real stories, and real data to engage students in exploring the living world.
BioInteractive offers an array of engaging resources including videos, simulations, virtual labs, and classroom activities, all designed to bring biological research to life. These resources are accompanied by thorough teacher guides written by educators.
Covering topics like evolution, ecology, genetics, biodiversity, and human health, the activities are based on real research, such as data from Gorongosa National Park's trail cameras used to create biomass pyramids. Teachers can easily navigate through the materials by topic or resource type, with options like Collections or Short Courses available. Additionally, film guides, posters, and downloadable apps are provided to support classroom integration.
