Welcome to the Teacher’s Guide for Indigenous War Heroes, developed by the Wasauksing War Hero and Native Veteran’s Educational Awareness and Commemoration Project. The guide and associated website use the story of Francis Pegahmagabow as a launching point to provide educators and students with a framework and resources for understanding the military contributions of First World War Indigenous soldiers, as well as the cultural and political landscapes in which they lived.

The lesson plans explore the connections Francis Pegahmagabow’s life story has with many Indigenous veterans, thus helping illustrate the larger picture of Canada’s historical relationship with local Indigenous peoples. However, it is important to note there are always a diversity of stories and experiences in any complex situation. Not all Indigenous veterans’ experiences will be the same, and all unique stories are valuable contributions to our overall understanding of history.

Concentus Citizenship Education Foundation Inc. is the foundation that administers, supports, and fundraises for the development and advancement of the Concentus classroom-ready, kindergarten to grade 12 teaching resources for citizenship. A committed group of teacher-leaders developed these grade-specific resources to directly align with Saskatchewan curricula.
The declared purpose of the Concentus Citizenship Education Foundation is to:

Educate and empower individuals to understand their rights
Encourage responsible, respectful and participatory citizenship
Promote a commitment to justice in a pluralistic society.

"Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples Inc. (LSSAP) has taken the lead in coordinating the Saskatchewan Aboriginal Storytelling Month Project to promote First Nation and Métis oral traditions and the use of public libraries. The winter timing of Aboriginal Storytelling observes the First Nation traditional time for storytelling.

A virtual storytelling event, in partnership with Indigenous filmmakers Curtis Peeteetuce and Marcel Petit, took place on February 1, 2021. The launch event was the final production of a series called Kohkom (grandmother). "

This site, hosted by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, offers many opportunities for students to gain proficiency in the Cree language through:

The Learning Circle is designed to help meet Canadian educators' growing need for elementary-level learning exercises on First Nations. It is the third in a series of four classroom guides on First Nations in Canada.

OVERVIEW: Students learn about the oral culture and history-keeping of the Nakota people, who made the Lone Dog Winter Count. Then they create a monthly pictograph calendar of their own to document a year of their personal history.

The resource was designed for anyone who teaches Mi’kmaw history, culture and knowledge. Through the stories and knowledge of Mi’kmaw Elders, educators, and other experts, this volume will share content and teaching strategies for three subject areas for grades primary to nine:
- Welo'ltimk—Healing
- Kejitasimkewey Kiskuk—Contemporary Issues
- Netukulimk—Economic, Social, and Political Life

The content and strategies are grouped into three age ranges, Primary to Grade 3, Grades 4 to 6, and Grades 7 to 9, with specific topics shown below. For each topic, educators will find: • core themes and issues • an opening activity(ies) • a core activity • extension activities • curriculum outcomes

The downloadable resource and companion materials offer the following lessons and activities:

SUMMARY OF UNIT
This unit focuses on the worldview and identity of Aboriginal people, but also the world view and identity of the students themselves. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their values and beliefs, and how they relate to Aboriginal perspective. A major component of the unit also addresses stereotypes and how labeling impacts the identity of Aboriginal people. Students will be able to analyze a variety of text forms that contain stereotypes and create an informed opinion based on their understanding. It is hoped that by the end of the unit, students will have a greater awareness and understanding of Aboriginal worldview and identity, but their own as well. Included are all lesson materials and PowerPoints to accompany the lessons.

Please note that the Native Studies 10 curriculum has not been renewed since it was originally developed in 2002, so foundational objectives and learning objectives are used. Because our students are familiar with learning outcomes, the author simplified the objectives by making them more similar to outcomes.

Supporting First Nations, Métis and Inuit Youth to make Positive Changes in
their Communities: A Guide for Educators and Youth Program Facilitators

Students will learn ‘through’ the development and implementation of their action projects, rather
than ‘about’ action.

Action projects develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are central to many youth
programs. Action projects:
• develop communication skills
• foster critical thinking skills
• promote leadership skills
• help young people to identify things that are important to them and support them to think
through the process required to make positive change
• offer opportunities for young people to experience meaningful success
• offer youth an opportunity to learn about and understand FNMI spiritual teachings, including
the teaching that all living beings have a Spirit

The script has been divided into four scenes, each taking place at a different location. To help students make sense of the locations, here is an outline map of Canada with capital cities.

I have listed the readers in each scene to allow you the opportunity to include all class members in the Reader’s Theatre experience.

New words and locations are identified by an asterisk * to give teachers an opportunity to stop the reading to discuss the term.
