NBS Sharing Dance Day
Rating
0.0 stars

Each year, Canada’s National Ballet School commissions a Canadian artist to create a piece of choreography that embodies a thoughtful theme.

Step-by-step instructional videos guide you through the choreography—whether you want to invest in learning and performing the full piece, or are exploring just a small portion of the material.

The choreography builds towards NBS Sharing Dance Day, a nationwide dance party bringing together tens of thousands of people in communities across the country. NBS Sharing Dance started as a flashmob in Toronto in 2010 and has grown over the years into an incredible celebration of the joy, creativity and community of dance from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

The dance day can be extended by a teacher to include additional arts ed. outcomes (CR6.2, CH6.1, for example)

In this lesson, students investigate these questions by analyzing videos of dancing through the decades. With the help of a worksheet, student groups watch footage of the Charleston and Lindy Hop, the Mambo, "Love-in" dancing, Disco, and Break Dancing. Based on their informed observation of these styles, they then debate whether dance has "evolved" in American culture, or remained mostly the same.

Powwow! Ohcîwin The Origins
Oh-cÎ-win:
Ooo-chi-win, Cree
1. “The Origin” or telling of a story of where something originated
Powwows are Indigenous cultural celebrations where many forms of dance styles are performed as part of the ceremony. These social gatherings, held across North America, bring people together to sing, dance and share teachings all while celebrating Indigenous culture. Each dance style has a meaning or origin story and a specific purpose. Regalia, the distinctive clothing and ornamentation worn by the dancers, corresponds to the different dance styles.

Powwow! OchÎwin the Origins was created by Patrick and Marrisa Mitsuing of Powwow Times. Working with a diverse team of Indigenous Artists they assembled each of the individual dance regalia on display. During the 2019 and 2020 Powwow season, they met with knowledge keepers across North America to record the origin stories of the dances they perform.

The dances are: Men’s Traditional, Men’s Fancy, Men’s Chicken, Men’s Grass, Women’s Traditional, Women’s Fancy and Women’s Jingle.

Using Technology with Dance in the Gym

I adapted an assignment designed for younger students to fit my class and the use of technology. Students were put into groups and given an iPad. I put up the QR Codes listed at the bottom of this page around the gym in 3 separate groups for the types of dance covered. The groups then had to scan their QR Codes and work collaboratively together to create an original dance piece. After presenting their choreography to the class they were to then teach their peers the basic steps of the dance style they learned.
