The Learning Circle - Classroom Activities on First Nations in Canada

The Learning Circle has been produced to help meet Canadian educator's growing need for elementary-level learning exercises on First Nations. There are four classroom guides (ages 4-7, ages 8-11, ages 12-14, ages 14-16) on First Nations in Canada. The Learning Circle is organized in thematic units. each with its own teaching activities. Units are designed to give teachers and students simple but effective exercises, projects and activities that will encourage students to learn more about First Nations. Educators can follow some of the exercises as stand-alone units on First Nations topics, or integrate them with existing curricula on Aboriginal peoples. Most exercises in The Learning Circle can be completed in one period. Certain others will take several periods, days or weeks.

LIVE (Live Interactive Video Education) Arts Education is a dynamic distance education arts program for students in Grades 1 to 9. The program supports the Saskatchewan Arts Education curriculum and is delivered via the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education LIVE Network (CommunityNet).

Teachers sign up for grade specific programs then professional Artists connect simultaneously with teachers and students in multiple schools across the province of Saskatchewan for a LIVE experience with Arts Education.

Information about the grade level, arts strand, guest artist, date and time and program guides are listed on this website.

This program started out in 2005 as an Artist in the School distance education pilot program hosted by Regina Catholic Schools. Initially the broadcast programming was delivered by Mixed Media Artist in Residence Heather Cline from a special distance education broadcast classroom at St. Peter School in Regina. The program has continued to expand and evolve responding to the needs of Saskatchewan Teachers and the new Saskatchewan Arts Curriculum.

Last year the LIVE Arts program, in partnership with several Saskatchewan School Divisions, broadcast 36 programs featuring Professional Artists in the areas of Visual Arts, Drama, Music and Dance. Each program featured a Guest Artist working with a classroom teacher and their students. Teachers and students participating via distance technology followed along with the help of a guide that outlined the broadcast portion of the program and provided teachers with a follow-up hands-on activity.

National Science Laboratory Video Lessons for Indigenous Youth

First Nations University has developed a new science teaching resource called the National Science Laboratory Video Lessons for Indigenous Youth. The resource includes a variety of materials that bring together Indigenous knowledge and modern science, such as interviews with elders and knowledge keepers, laboratory manuals, and videos of lab experiments completed by students at Carlton Comprehensive High School in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

FNU professor and project lead Arzu Sardarli explained that Indigenous knowledge on topics such as heat retention in teepees can be explained using the laws of physics and applied toward house construction today. "It's important not only for Indigenous students, it's very helpful for any student and I hope what we created within this project will be used by mainstream schools, too,” said Sardarli.

The educational materials developed include interviews with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and laboratory manuals and videos for high school Biology, Chemistry and Physics classes.

NFB Education is proud to partner with the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation to help teachers educate students about Indigenous realities during National Truth and Reconciliation Week, as well as throughout the year.

This year, the theme of National Truth and Reconciliation Week is “Remembering the Children,” where we memorialize the children lost to the residential school system and honour Survivors and their families. The expanded program features age-appropriate material for students in Grades 1–12.

All sessions will be held virtually on Hubilo. Registration is required to stream live or pre-recorded sessions and to participate in the Q&A segment. The link for registration is provided on this page.

Native Studies 10: Aboriginal perspective-Identity & Worldview

SUMMARY OF UNIT
This unit focuses on the worldview and identity of Aboriginal people, but also the world view and identity of the students themselves. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their values and beliefs, and how they relate to Aboriginal perspective. A major component of the unit also addresses stereotypes and how labeling impacts the identity of Aboriginal people. Students will be able to analyze a variety of text forms that contain stereotypes and create an informed opinion based on their understanding. It is hoped that by the end of the unit, students will have a greater awareness and understanding of Aboriginal worldview and identity, but their own as well. Included are all lesson materials and PowerPoints to accompany the lessons.

Please note that the Native Studies 10 curriculum has not been renewed since it was originally developed in 2002, so foundational objectives and learning objectives are used. Because our students are familiar with learning outcomes, the author simplified the objectives by making them more similar to outcomes.

This is a lesson designed to teach Elementary students about Treaty 6.

The script has been divided into four scenes, each taking place at a different location. To help students make sense of the locations, here is an outline map of Canada with capital cities.

I have listed the readers in each scene to allow you the opportunity to include all class members in the Reader’s Theatre experience.

New words and locations are identified by an asterisk * to give teachers an opportunity to stop the reading to discuss the term.

Photographs of the people involved in the Treaty process are included at the end of the script.

Rekindling Traditions Cross-Cultural Science & Technology Units (CCSTU) Project

The CCSTU project has produced:
- strategies for teaching and assessing students (illustrated in the materials produced)
- 6 exemplary curriculum units (Wild Rice, Trapping, Snowshoes, Nature's Hidden Gifts, The Night Sky, Survival in Our Land)
- a prototype process for adapting any curriculum material to suit the local culture

From the earliest days before Canada was even a country of its own, through through the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, post-war peace support efforts, Afghanistan and on to the present day, thousands of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and other Indigenous men and women have served bravely and well in uniform.
