Math is one of those subjects – you either love it or you hate it. Despite the challenges, incorporating inquiry learning into a structured math program can be done.

Creating opportunities for math inquiry can be as simple as pulling out a box of manipulatives, such as blocks, measuring tools, dice, or an iPad. Alternatively, role-playing can be a fun way of structuring math learning into real-life scenarios.

The more kids see math applied in their everyday life, the more comfortable they will become with math concepts. For example, grocery shopping, giving change or calculating a discount on an item.

The following questions will hopefully help you incorporate deeper thinking during math class, and help inspire you to conjure up some math inquiry investigations of your own.

Grade 3 Ecology Programs – Northeast Swale
Explore Nature in the City! The Grade 3 Program at the Northeast Swale is a half-day of learning in a unique prairie wetland habitat. This program includes a nature hike in the ecological core of the Northeast Swale and features the exploration of ecosystem connections, identification of grassland plants and wildlife, nature mindfulness, and discussions of Indigenous Worldviews and treaty relationships as well as other place-based learnings.

These half-day programs (9:30 am – 11:30 am OR 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm) are offered in spring (May & June) and fall (September & October).

Grade 4/5/6 Ecology Programs – Beaver Creek Conservation Area
Beaver Creek Ecology programs include a full day of learning out in nature! You and your students will learn about and observe spring/fall migration, and mating and nesting behaviors of common birds at Beaver Creek with a special focus on the resident Black-capped Chickadee. This program also explores the impacts of weather systems on plants and animals, sustainable grassland management, medicinal plant uses, keystone species, predator-prey relationships, and the importance of citizen science.

These full-day programs (10:00 am – 2:30 pm) are offered each spring (April – June) and fall (September – November). We are grateful to SaskPower for their support of Meewasin’s educational programming.

Grade 4/5/6 Cross-Country Ski Program – Beaver Creek Conservation Area
In this full day program, students have an opportunity to feed the resident Black-capped Chickadees at Beaver Creek and to learn about winter adaptations, the importance of snow as habitat, and animal tracks on the open prairie. Students are introduced to cross-country skiing through a short lesson, followed by a 60 – 90 minute ski on the upland prairie with stunning views of the South Saskatchewan River Valley.

This ski trail is both fun and accessible for all skill levels! This full-day program (10:00 am – 2:30 pm) is offered in winter (January – March).

Concentus provides a full downloadable unit with a teacher and student resource booklet. This unit focuses on citizenship and aims to meet the following goals:Foster Engaged citizens who question, critically examine, advocate, and defend rights and responsibilities embedded in democracy at the local, regional, provincial, national, and global levels.Foster Lifelong learning citizens who continuously strive to understand the dynamics of change in society, and they critically seek new information to make reasoned and unbiased decisions.Foster Citizens with a strong sense of self, community, and place who value and demonstrate a positive commitment to understanding these concepts as citizens, and to the exploration of citizenship responsibilities inherent in these relationships at local, regional, national, and global levels.

Join spoken word poet Janelle “ecoaborijanelle” Pewapsconias. Using flow poetry, you and your students will explore our Saskatchewan watersheds and water systems as a topic of focus for poetic expression and scientific inquiry. The broadcast will include performances by the artist as well as opportunities to observe a collaborative writing process, practice induction and deduction, and assess the created piece based on the flow poetry skills developed.

This amazing resource looks at FNME from grades 1 to 9 with an inquiry approach. The key questions are examined for the grades including treaty relationships, spirit and intent, historical context, and treaty promises and provisions.

Following that a specific resource for each grade is included!

Students learn about the phases of the moon by acting them out. In 30 minutes, they will act out one complete, 30-day, moon cycle.

*Materials required:
-pencil or wooden skewer (one per student)
-white styrofoam ball, 5 centimetres or larger (one per student)
