This package is the online accompaniment for our feature travelling education kit: History Box. In this package you’ll find digitized copies of each object found in the box, historical context, additional resources and activity suggestions. You do not need to borrow the kit to use this online resource.

This package contains objects and resources that are represented in the Canadian Museum of History’s signature exhibition, the Canadian History Hall. Collected from across the country, and highlighting varied perspectives, these objects illuminate the richness and diversity of the Canadian experience. They can be used as entry points to discussions on different periods in Canada’s history, or as lessons in historical inquiry that can build students’ critical thinking and historical inquiry skills.

The topics covered in this History Box include Early Canada, Colonial Canada, and Modern Canada.

There are two types of activities: Package Activities and Object Activities.

Package Activities are project-based activities designed to accommodate one or more classes. These activities involve the use of historical thinking concepts while exploring the whole package, resulting in a more comprehensive experience.

Object Activities are short inquiry-based activities that typically take 5–25 minutes. These activities encourage students to think critically about the objects being presented, and to use historical thinking concepts.

Both types of activities were created with the guidance of educators from across Canada, and incorporate current educational theory and approaches.

Is everything accessible?
We know that everyone accesses information differently, and have tried to ensure that package content addresses the varied needs of students and educators. Some of the many ways in which these packages support accessibility:

Process For Teaching Inquiry 1. Set up MOTIVATE – with essential question and frontloading, personally connect students to content 2. Standards or goals Meeting them through MULTIPLE MODALITIES and MEASURES to Articulate major learning goals, both conceptual (what) and strategic (how). o Provide multiple ways for learning and demonstrating learning of the standards/end goals/ enduring understandings through independent culminating projects 3. Sequence or scaffold for gradual release of responsibility by MODEL – for – Teacher does/students watch MENTOR – with – Teacher does/students help and students do together/teacher helps MONITOR – by – Student does/Teacher assesses and helps as needed

Youth who participate in the art and essay stream can submit an art piece, essay, or other representation to express their vision of a reconciled Canada and what they hope others will learn from their submission.

Youth who participate in the project stream are asked to go one step further and submit a plan on how their project will address Reconciliation in their community or school.

Youth from select projects in both streams will be invited to participate in virtual leadership training exercises.

At the end of the school year, a national celebration will be held to honour up to twelve projects from the art and essay stream and up to fifteen projects from the project stream.

It is intended to support educators in developing their understanding of inquiry-based learning, its application in the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, and the benefts it provides to students.

This guide is divided into four sections to support educators in exploring inquiry in health and physical education. Section One provides an overview of inquiry-based learning as it applies to Health and Physical Education. Section Two provides an overview of assessment in inquiry-based learning and related implementation tools. Section Three demonstrates how educators may apply an inquiry-based learning approach in Health and Physical Education, with guidelines for educators to use as they consider different components of the Inquiry Framework. Instructables is a website specializing in user-created and uploaded do-it-yourself projects, currently owned by Autodesk. It was created by Eric Wilhelm and Saul Griffith and launched in August 2005.

Instructables is dedicated to step-by-step collaboration among members to build a variety of projects.

In this unit, students explore a variety of resources—texts, images, sounds, photos, and other artifacts—to learn more about the Holocaust. Beginning with journal writings and a picture book to introduce the central issues, the unit focuses on student-centered inquiry. Students explore a range of print and non-print resources through extensive online inquiry activities. Progressing from individual work to a group learning project, the unit culminates in publishing the group's findings in topic-based newspapers.

The lesson includes complete lists of picture books, read-aloud books, reference texts, and online sites and collections that allow teachers to customize the activities to fit the available resources and students' specific research interests.

The purpose of this STEM project was for student’s to show their mastery of outcomes ME3.1 and ME3.2 using a STEM challenge. STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and requires the usage of each area in the planning, design and building of an inquiry-based project. In this challenge, the students were tasked with designing and building a magnetic maze for their classmates to maneuver a paper clip through in a race. The students were required to plan their maze and gather materials prior to class then assemble and test during class time. They then had the opportunity to test the mazes of two other classmates. Post-reflection of the activity involved discussion and evaluation of what worked and what didn’t and the best ideas and strategies that were discovered.
