Animating Media Literacy
Rating

We know that the everyday lives of our students are inundated with media. This often-overwhelming menu of media-rich entrées gets served up at a rate that seems to value overconsumption more than proper and meaningful digestion. As educators, we may be left wondering, how do we beef up (or tofu up , if you prefer) our students’ appetites for media-literacy so that they can skillfully navigate our ever-changing, media-saturated landscape?

Ocean School North Atlantic Unit
Rating

Ocean School is a free, innovative inquiry-based learning experience. Each Ocean School unit contains 15+ pieces of media (like short fact-based science videos, 360° videos, virtual and augmented reality experiences) and accompanying customizable student activities. All Ocean School resources are available in French and English.

> THE NORTH ATLANTIC UNIT
Join our youth hosts Holly, Anisha, Isabelle and lead scientist, Dr. Boris Worm as they take a journey of discovery, racing to find out what we can do to keep our ocean — as well as our own lives — healthy and safe. Together, they join Fisheries and Oceans Canada scientists, and Indigenous Elders and community members to find out:
How we can contribute to healthy habitats?
What actions can we take to protect ecosystems?
How sustainable is our use of our marine resources?

> SUPPORT RESOURCES
Ocean School Educator Guides are available on our Help Centre: https://help.oceanschool.nfb.ca/educational-resources/module-guides.

> ABOUT OCEAN SCHOOL
Dalhousie University and the Ocean Frontier Institute have teamed up with the National Film Board of Canada to create Ocean School. The Ocean School experience begins by presenting learners with a big question — a challenge that guides their inquiry. Each piece of media comes with a customizable activity that educators can assign via Google Classroom or download to use in class. At the end of a module, learners develop a “Take Action” plan to address the critical social and environmental problems they’ve been learning about.

> ACCESS
Ocean School is a free resource for everyone that requires a free account, SK teachers have access to Ocean School through their NFB account. If you do not have an NFB account, you will have to make one upon your first visit to Ocean School.
