The Learning Circle has been produced to help meet Canadian educator's growing need for elementary-level learning exercises on First Nations. There are four classroom guides (ages 4-7, ages 8-11, ages 12-14, ages 14-16) on First Nations in Canada. The Learning Circle is organized in thematic units. each with its own teaching activities. Units are designed to give teachers and students simple but effective exercises, projects and activities that will encourage students to learn more about First Nations. Educators can follow some of the exercises as stand-alone units on First Nations topics, or integrate them with existing curricula on Aboriginal peoples. Most exercises in The Learning Circle can be completed in one period. Certain others will take several periods, days or weeks.

Libby, by OverDrive
Rating
0.0 stars

Libby, by Overdrive is a books app that allows kids to browse and borrow ebooks and audiobooks from public libraries for free. Kids will need a library card to download or stream the books they want to borrow. The app connects users to their local library's ebook and audiobook collection. Users can link multiple library cards from different branches to access a wider collection. Kids can sample books before deciding to borrow them. If they're not immediately available, they can put titles on hold, and the activity tracker lets them track what they've read. Search for a specific title or explore different collections, including Kids, Teens, What's Popular?, and Subjects. Little kids can access picture books with read-along audio, making some books more accessible to early readers. Even though Libby, by Overdrive gives users access to a wide range of books, grown-ups can activate a juvenile or young adult filter in order to limit kids' access to the entire collection.

DON'T FORGET YOU CAN ACCESS BOOKS ON SORA AS WELL ALL YEAR LONG (if your school has Sora)!

LitPick Book Reviews
Rating
0.0 stars

This site offers a reading and writing initiative that connects authors with readers.

Teachers can use this site to make reading and writing more relevant to their students. No matter the grade, LitPick could be a great fit for an independent reading activity. Students can read the reviews of books for free and can sign up as reviewers, request books that interest them to review, and then publish reviews as the culminating assessment. LitPick also supports a book group experience. In this model, an entire classroom can join LitPick as one group, and teachers can monitor the group from a dashboard. Students can all read and review the same book, or choose different ones. There's also an option to do video reviews, which might be good for older students as a way to extend learning beyond the written review.
