We have been using more Inquiry and Project Based Learning in our Grade 4 Social Studies class at OES this year, with the students learning to think critically and work collaboratively as they investigated the “big questions” tied to the SS outcomes. They were encouraged to reach beyond the classroom and access resource people outside the school in their research. The Grade 4 Social Studies curriculum is based on Saskatchewan content and we were fortunate to connect with some excellent sources and learning partners from all around the province.

Inspiring Success: First Nations and Métis PreK-12 Education Policy Framework

Inspiring Success: First Nations and Métis PreK-12 Education Policy Framework was renewed in collaboration among First Nations and Métis organizations, Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers, post-secondary and provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education stakeholders, and the Ministry of Education. The vision of Inspiring Success is a provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education system that foundationally places Indigenous knowledge systems, cultures and languages within the structures, policies and curricula to ensure an equitable and inclusive system that benefits all learners. As such, this renewed policy framework guides actions at all levels of the education sector and is aligned with the goals of the Education Sector Strategic Plan. Inspiring Success supports reconciliation, treaty education, Indigenous cultures and languages in the classroom, as well as the infusion of Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing into all renewed curricula to benefit all learners.

The ministry is committed to facilitate the sharing of information, tools and processes useful to school divisions, teachers and administrators in planning and implementing actions in First Nations and Métis education, in alignment with the policy goals. Improving First Nations, Métis and Inuit student achievement and the learning outcomes for all students is a shared responsibility throughout the PreK-12 education sector.

As a first step, it is recommended to become familiar with the policy framework.

Implementation
We heard from First Nations and Métis organizations, Elders, provincial education stakeholders and post-secondary institutions about how crucial implementation will be for this policy framework. We acknowledge the considerable number of initiatives and programs put in place by government and by school divisions; however, there is more work to do. A variety of tools and resources are available to assist with creating awareness, building support, planning and implementation, including a webinar presentation, PowerPoint slideshow, promotional handout and dialogue questions. Many links are provided within each goal area as suggested resources for teachers and administrators. More will be added as new information and tools become available.

"Guided by the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination recognizes that the injustices and prejudices fueled by racial discrimination take place every day. Observed annually on March 21, it commemorates the day police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960."

The collection includes an introduction by Good, a long and thorough interview with him, and three appreciations of his work. I.J. Good is a legendary statistician whose work has had tremendous influence, not only in statistical sciences but also in world politics, from code-breaking during World War II to policy formation during Cold War negotiations with the Soviet Union. The print version of the book, available from Rice University Press, includes thirty years' worth of Good's witty essays on statistics, originally published in the Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation.

Invasive Species: A Biodiversity Challenge

This multi-disciplinary resource features ten engaging lessons that focus on biodiversity and invasive species. An ecosystem approach provides an authentic context to help students understand what invasive species are and how these plants and animals can significantly impact the vital interdependence of organisms within habitats. Although developed to support the Grade 6 Life Sciences curriculum (Ontario), the strong English Language Arts, Math and Social Studies links make this resource applicable across a broad range of subject areas and grade levels.

In a combination of in-class and outdoor activities students will:

- Define and explore types of invasive species.
- Identify how organisms interact within ecosystems.
- Respond to media information about invasive species.
- Explore a local habitat to find and catalogue native and non-native species.
- Initiate action to inform the community about the prevention of the spread of invasive species.

In this unit, students explore a variety of resources—texts, images, sounds, photos, and other artifacts—to learn more about the Holocaust. Beginning with journal writings and a picture book to introduce the central issues, the unit focuses on student-centered inquiry. Students explore a range of print and non-print resources through extensive online inquiry activities. Progressing from individual work to a group learning project, the unit culminates in publishing the group's findings in topic-based newspapers.

The lesson includes complete lists of picture books, read-aloud books, reference texts, and online sites and collections that allow teachers to customize the activities to fit the available resources and students' specific research interests.
