Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan

"This page is for educators and students. The Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan is a strong advocate of nature education.

Find: Games, simulations, interactive prairie websites, posters, booklets, curriculum, lesson plans, coloring pages for local species.

In addition to the resources found here, we also support schools by:

providing free printed materials
leading field tours
delivering outdoor and classroom presentations
hosting opportunities to "ask an expert", where students can interact with a professional biologist or related occupation though in person events or Skype. In some cases, we can arrange for French-speaking experts.

We also support the establishment of native plant learning gardens on school grounds by offering free native seeds, printed resources, personal visits, presentations and expert advice to help with all stages of the process. The gardens can be as small as a square meter."

Ninja Kitchen
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

Speed is important, but in this kitchen, safety comes first. Ninja Kitchen is an educational food safety game that helps learners internalize strategies for avoiding cross-contamination, cooking meat to the proper temperature, and keeping foods cold to prevent microbial growth. In early levels, contamination is visible as a green film on food or plates. In later levels it becomes invisible, and players use strategies learned in earlier levels to keep their customers safe. The Ninja Kitchen project aimed to address youth food-handling responsibilities and to help overcome obstacles they encounter in practicing food safety, such as limited knowledge of foodborne disease and preventative behaviors, psychosocial factors (i.e., attitudes, locus of control, self-efficacy), and their existing habits in handling food. A study with ~400 middle schoolers, conducted by Rutgers researchers, indicated Ninja Kitchen was effective in improving food safety knowledge, attitudes and intentions.

During the learning activities, students will become familiar with Christmas vocabulary, explore what Christmas means to them, discuss ways Santa knows their behaviour during the year, and what they would like for Christmas. They even invent a toy-making machine. For the experiential goal, students will write a letter to Santa and present their letters to the class.

'The teacher’s guide includes learning objectives, a list of resources and step-by-step suggestions on how to teach the unit. In addition, the guide includes answer sheets, suggested vocabulary and motivational games, supplementary activities, flashcards, model letter to parents, evaluation grids and activities, and website addresses.

'The student workbook includes the necessary student activity sheets, vocabulary lists, and teacher, peer and self-evaluation grids. '

Numeracy is having the confidence and habits of mind to use mathematics to meet the general demands of everyday life. Being a numerate person means using mathematics to make sense of something new and know what mathematics can and cannot do.

Numeracy provides First Nations, Métis and Inuit students the opportunity to discover connections on their own and apply strategies to solve real life problems. Throughout history, First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples have used real life traditional learning contexts to connect to their world.

In the Empowering the Spirit video series, students explore numeracy through Traditional Games, an elementary math class on probability and a high school physics class examining the structure of a tee pee and rocket nozzle.
