This is a lesson about crystal growth. Leaners will grow a sugar crystal and learn how this relates to growing protein crystals in space. This is a lesson to demonstrate magnetic field lines in 2- and 3-dimensions. In the first activity, learners sprinkle iron filings over a magnet underneath a paper and record their observations. The second activity involves building a 3-D magnetic field visualizer using a clear plastic bottle, a cow magnet and iron filings. The rubric provided above is a universal rubric that can be used for evaluating journal reflections. I have specifically used this rubric in English Language Arts 8

The assessment developed to assess student reflections to course content in ELA 8, specifically for outcome Cr8.1. It is a four point scale that simply focuses on content presented in the reflection and how students interpret and analyze content for meaning as well as including their opinions with supported evidence. Although created for ELA 8, this rubric could be adapted and used for any subject journal reflections. --Developed by Kiara Smith

Juggling in Middle Years

I originally presented this assignment to students as part of a "Character Building" unit on self-discipline.

This assignment is used as one assessment for outcomes 7.5, 8.3, and 9.4/9.5 in middle years PE.

The students use their own time to complete the juggling task, and are instructed to track their progress and present it to the teacher in any way they want. I usually give the students a month to complete the assignment.

Jump Math is an amazing resource for teachers that are not confident teaching math (and those who are!). Strategies are explicitly taught. Many sample materials are free, or resources can be ordered as well. This is a great option for outcome based learning.

This is an activity about electromagnetism. Learners will use a simple circuit powered by a battery source to investigate the strength of the magnetic field produced by a coil of wire in the circuit. The strength will be indicated by the deflection of magnetic compass needles and by the distance a coil of wire was moved by the action of the circuit. This activity requires coils or spools of wire, a knife switch, three magnetic compasses, a source of electricity such as 3 D-cell batteries or an AC to DC power adapter, alligator-clipped wire, and a bar or cow magnet. This is the fourth lesson in the second session of the Exploring Magnetism teachers guide.

This video shows 1st graders participating in the end of cycle reading and spelling assessment with their teacher in our K-2 Reading Foundations Skills Block. It specifically shows the spelling portion. The teacher administers the assessment with a small group, evaluates their responses, and confers with each student to set an individual goal. End of cycle assessments are used throughout Kindergarten-2nd grade, typically weekly.
