Throughout the course of the year students are expected to collect and write abstracts on 20 Biology and Biotechnology articles. The articles must be up to date and current. Students are asked to write on the connections and possible applications these new technologies and information will have on their lives and people in general. Students can be creative in their presentation of their articles and information. Students can make many connections to other material covered in the course and comment on that as well.
Students have become somewhat of an expert on the topic they have done a particular article on. During class students will sometimes volunteer and sometimes be asked for their expertise during a class discussion. This often creates some good discussions that hopefully make students think.

Breaking News English is a free current events based lesson builder. New lesson every three days. All lessons are based on stories currently in the news - as the world's news breaks, teach it.

This site is very valuable for EAL students as it allows the speed of the audio of the article to be adjusted to the pace best suited to the language level of the student. It also offers a wide range of language activities to support EAL students.

"With its reliable news in 10-minute video segments, CNN 10 allows teachers to keep students abreast of current events without overwhelming them with extra information or commentary. CNN 10 can be used as a starting point for a variety of activities. For instance, post a discussion question of the day related to a news topic and ask students to talk in small groups about how the story affects them. Ask students to choose a story of interest and probe into it for more depth. Flip the classroom by having students watch selected videos at home, and facilitate related projects in class. Promote collaboration and creativity by having students create their own news broadcasts related to curricular goals. Finally, promote media literacy by having students compare CNN's coverage with other media coverage of the same stories.

CNN 10 offers limited supports for classroom use: broadcast transcripts and downloadable weekly quiz questions, all targeted to the topics. But students can go to the top of the screen to get to more adult articles and topics, so beware. Still, that shouldn't deter kids who want to use the site independently or parents who want to help their kids learn what's going on in the world; the materials are user-friendly enough for everyone." Kids Scoop is News magazine that features standards-aligned activity packs for kids K-5.

Kid Scoop News magazine is available as a free PDF or print newspaper delivered to classrooms. This magazine can be shared with students to read at home or in the classroom. After students have read through the magazine, teachers might have them share out to the class something they learned or had a question about. This could kick off a discussion and might even lead to further research into some of the more interesting topics.

Beyond the magazine, teachers will find dozens of downloadable activities and lesson plans -- some free, some paid -- to slot into lessons. Many of these would work well as ways to kick off or cool down a class period. The resources for home-school connections offer helpful tips for communicating with parents about ways kids can use and benefit from Kid Scoop News at home.

"While National Geographic Kids isn't well-organized for teachers, it is a fantastic resource for students to explore their interests and follow their curiosity. The site would be a great way to introduce the diversity of life on Earth: Encourage students to learn about new animals, watch the science and geography series, and explore the interactive world map. The Homework Help section can provide additional information for light research papers or projects. Teachers can search, themselves, for resources that match topics they're working on in the classroom.

Teachers of younger students will find this easy-to-use educational tool a great way to increase engagement and add extension activities for science and social studies lessons. Access various journals, magazines, newspapers, cyclopedia, research resources, primary sources (History), age appropriate resources for inquiry and PBL, videos, games, and health and wellness resources!

Students will compare portrayals of individual soldiers to depictions of battle scenes, write two articles representing two different perspectives about a current war, and manipulate a photograph to alter its mood.

Newsela provides high-interest, printable news articles from a wide range of subject areas. Teachers can adjust the reading level of news articles to meet the needs of students. Within each article, power words are identified. Students can click on these and see the definition in student-friendly language. Newsela also provides writing prompts and questions about the articles. You can sign up for free access to the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although the site is American, there are lots of applicable news stories that align with Saskatchewan curricula and context.
