The Learning Circle is designed to help meet Canadian educators' growing need for elementary-level learning exercises on First Nations. It is the third in a series of four classroom guides on First Nations in Canada.

This unit plan overview provides links to all lessons along with links to accompanying teacher support materials that include: Student worksheets and answer guides for individual lessons; Inquiry activities with support materials. This unit includes 5 lessons that includes: Understanding Indigenous Symbols, Vocabulary and Literacy Builder activities, Medicine from the Land, "The Story of Sky Woman" and worksheets and activities to accompany the story.

The Little Women’s Lodge Kit Stories help children to learn about traditional parenting roles and responsibilities from a young age, while also teaching them Cree language reading, writing and singing.The four Cree storybooks are the core of this resource, bringing ancient Indigenous teachings to a new generation.

Grade Level: 4–8 Time Required: Approximately 4 one-hour class periods and 2-3 homework sessions
OVERVIEW: Students learn about the oral culture and history-keeping of the Nakota people, who made the Lone Dog Winter Count. Then they create a monthly pictograph calendar of their own to document a year of their personal history.

This project is best completed prior to reading the novel, Mistasiniy:  Buffalo Rubbing Stone by Mary Harelkin Bishop to avoid influence of references in the text.  The original size of the Lake Diefenbaker mistasiniy is introduced in the novel's preface, while the size of the mistasiniy on Danny’s family’s land is mentioned on page 109 as part of Rose’s diary.   Students will work individually on a math inquiry problem challenging students to solve questions using estimation, approximations, geometry, analytical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and technology skills. The resource was designed for anyone who teaches Mi’kmaw history, culture and knowledge. Through the stories and knowledge of Mi’kmaw Elders, educators, and other experts, this volume will share content and teaching strategies for three subject areas for grades primary to nine:
- Welo'ltimk—Healing
- Kejitasimkewey Kiskuk—Contemporary Issues
- Netukulimk—Economic, Social, and Political Life

The content and strategies are grouped into three age ranges, Primary to Grade 3, Grades 4 to 6, and Grades 7 to 9, with specific topics shown below. For each topic, educators will find: • core themes and issues • an opening activity(ies) • a core activity • extension activities • curriculum outcomes

The Métis Alphabet Colouring Book is an adaptation of Joseph Jean Fauchon's popular children's book of the same name. With enhanced cultural content, this colouring book highlights historical figures, significant events, places of interest and other aspects of Métis identity to take youthful readers beyond the alphabet to explore the richness of Métis history and culture. George Gingras's images--which are meant to be coloured and are inspired by illustrations and photos--provide an engaging complement to the text. The Métis Alphabet Colouring Book strengthens Métis pride and identity while providing young readers with an informative reference book about the essence of being Métis.

Everyone is on a learning journey. While exploring historical and contemporary Métis ways of knowing and doing, these learning packages provide knowledge and understanding for students and teachers. This resource was created by Sr. Indigenous Consultant Elizabeth Zdunich from the Sask DLC. This learning activity bundle may be used with students to honour National Ribbon Skirt Day, and may also be used at any time throughout the year. Supporting videos and/or articles are provided for elementary, middle years and high school, as  well as a template to design your very own ribbon skirt or shirt. 

First Nations University has developed a new science teaching resource called the National Science Laboratory Video Lessons for Indigenous Youth. The resource includes a variety of materials that bring together Indigenous knowledge and modern science, such as interviews with elders and knowledge keepers, laboratory manuals, and videos of lab experiments completed by students at Carlton Comprehensive High School in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

FNU professor and project lead Arzu Sardarli explained that Indigenous knowledge on topics such as heat retention in teepees can be explained using the laws of physics and applied toward house construction today. "It's important not only for Indigenous students, it's very helpful for any student and I hope what we created within this project will be used by mainstream schools, too,” said Sardarli.

The educational materials developed include interviews with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and laboratory manuals and videos for high school Biology, Chemistry and Physics classes.

Canadian Teachers of grades 4-11 classes can find free, downloadable, printable Teachers’ Resource Kits (TRK’s). These materials are usable as is or customizable for printing and use in the classroom, and include lesson plans, reference to background materials, in-class exercises, quizzes, and grading rubrics.

SUMMARY OF UNIT
This unit focuses on the worldview and identity of Aboriginal people, but also the world view and identity of the students themselves. It provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their values and beliefs, and how they relate to Aboriginal perspective. A major component of the unit also addresses stereotypes and how labeling impacts the identity of Aboriginal people. Students will be able to analyze a variety of text forms that contain stereotypes and create an informed opinion based on their understanding. It is hoped that by the end of the unit, students will have a greater awareness and understanding of Aboriginal worldview and identity, but their own as well. Included are all lesson materials and PowerPoints to accompany the lessons.

Please note that the Native Studies 10 curriculum has not been renewed since it was originally developed in 2002, so foundational objectives and learning objectives are used. Because our students are familiar with learning outcomes, the author simplified the objectives by making them more similar to outcomes.
