Experience has shown that successful development is possible—if initiatives invest in people and ensure that beneficiaries over time become the owners of the development process. This means addressing the intertwined causes of poverty and helping communities mobilize their resources so that they can help themselves. ultimately, it means providing a hand up instead of a handout. The stories contained in this resource draw on the long-term experience of Canada and Canadians in the developing world, and encourage students to see themselves as part of the bridge of hope that unites us as global citizens.
Tips for using this resource: The lessons in this resource have been created as a unit that builds foundational understanding and encourages exploration of key concepts and critical global issues to allow for deeper learning and meaningful attitudinal change. While we recommend that the lessons be used together, each set of lesson activities can also stand alone to provide learning opportunities around a particular aspect of international development. The term “lesson” does not imply that it can be completed within one class. Class periods vary with timetables, and experience in co-operative learning, language levels and group dynamics can all affect the time needed to complete these activities. The teacher is the best judge of these factors.
Curriculum Connections: The themes and concepts presented provide excellent links to Ministry of Education curricular objectives/ expectations in Social Science, history and Geography programs across the country. activities also maximize a variety of specific skill-based objectives/expectations and competencies such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, social skills and map analysis. Each lesson outlines general objectives/expectations to assist teachers in program planning. "The Compassion Project is a web-based learning platform focusing on social and emotional learning (SEL) strengths like compassion and empathy. It begins with a tutorial, which students can always access by clicking the help button in the upper left corner. Each lesson starts with a pre-quiz to assess what students already know. After that, a bright and colorful two-minute video with cartoon characters describes the topic for the lesson. Four characters (Tye, Brandon, Alex, and David) narrate the videos in story format. After the video plays, there are reflection questions in the format of a text messenger app that students can click to answer. Characters introduce the SEL skills by describing what the skill (e.g., compassion) looks, sounds, and feels like.
Each skill has three activity lessons. For compassion, students identify when someone needs help and learn how to act with kindness. For empathy, students "see" life through the perspective of different characters. For mindfulness, students practice a breathing technique. Teachers can then provide debriefing and offline extension activities.

As students learn what goes into powering a province, it is hoped that they will also begin a journey of discovering the value of electricity in their lives and the role they can play to use less of it. This resource was developed to provide teachers with the most up‐to‐date information on electricity in Saskatchewan. As the electrical industry is constantly evolving and regulations and innovations influence new directions, it's important that teachers have current information to share with students. As much as possible, teachers are forwarded to the SaskPower website as that will have the most current content. These activities for ages 11-16 explore the human impact of the climate emergency and provide new spaces, approaches and opportunities for climate education and social action.
This resource frames the climate emergency as a human rights and people-centered issue and supports teachers to promote a sense of agency and empowerment within young people.
This in turn is recognized as one strategy to help young people manage eco-anxiety, as well as disillusionment and disengagement with climate issues.
The resource includes five activities:
Activity 1 - Climate change, human rights and equality - An activity to introduce the links between climate change and human rights
Activity 2 - Climate justice - A mystery activity to demonstrate the inequalities inherent in the global interconnectedness of climate change. All people are affected in some way by the climate emergency but who you are and where you are in the world matters
Activity 3 – Critically thinking about evidence -An activity to examine case study films and make conclusions about which human rights are most threatened by climate change, which groups in society are most affected and what the solutions are.
Activity 4 – A climate consequences wheel - A consequences wheel activity using evidence from one case study film to make inferences about the different impacts of climate change on members of a community with different personal characteristics (for example: male or female).
Activity 5 – The climate game - A role play activity for which a clear space, either indoors or outdoors, is required. Learners compare the impacts of climate change on people from different backgrounds and in different circumstances. For some participants, the impacts of climate change overlap and are amplified. This strengthens learners’ understanding of intersectionality (interconnectedness).

Let’s Talk Science, Canadensys Aerospace, and Avalon Space have teamed up to give Canadian youth in Grades 6-9 the opportunity to learn about rover technology and how to plan missions on the Moon.
The Lunar Rover Research Challenge invites teams of students to pitch their mission plans for the chance to remotely operate a Canadensys rover in a lunar-like environment.
Welcome to the Lunar Rover Research Challenge!
The challenge is for students to design a rover mission to find frozen water at the South Pole of the Moon. The activity is structured as a collaborative board game or digital game where students are guided through the design process. They equip their rover with scientific instruments, choose a target, then determine where to take measurements.
The experience is designed around 5 lessons:
1: Learn about Canada’s role in the upcoming lunar missions and the benefits of space exploration to life on Earth 2: Review the mission brief and learn how to plan a rover mission on the Moon 3: Plan the mission using an iterative design process scaffolded as a collaborative board game 4: Communicate ideas and prepare for submission 5: Reflect on the team’s experience and the impact of space exploration on society
Set in the context of space exploration, this project develops students’ design thinking, teamwork, and communication skills. Students must design their research mission by considering pros and cons, and weighing risks and rewards.
This challenge can be completed without a submission to the competition.
