Human Body- Investigate Various Pathologies and Ailments

For this project, students were placed into teams of health care researchers. Each team was assigned a certain pathogen (I used fungi, bacteria, and viruses since three teams worked well for the class size that I had) and told to develop a presentation to convince a group of investors to invest in the fight against their pathogen.
Presentations were expected to be professional (not a Bristol board poster with pictures glued on it) and timed (students were cut off after their time limit – finished or not). Students were assessed based on content, quality, and professionalism. An independent panel was brought in to judge the student presentations and decide how much of their money to invest.

Students are provided with a rigorous background in human "sensors" (including information on the main five senses, sensor anatomies, and nervous system process) and their engineering equivalents, setting the stage for three associated activities involving sound sensors on LEGO® robots. As they learn how robots receive input from sensors, transmit signals and make decisions about how to move, students reinforce their understanding of the human body's sensory process.

Students continue the research begun in the associated lesson as if they were biomedical engineers working for a pharmaceutical company. Groups each perform a simple chemical reaction (to precipitate solid calcium out of solution) to observe what may occur when Osteopontin levels drop in the body. With this additional research, students determine potential health complications that might arise from a new drug that could reduce inflammatory pain in many patients, improving their quality of life. The goal of this activity is to illustrate biomedical engineering as medical problem solving, as well as emphasize the importance of maintaining normal body chemistry.

Acting as if they are biomedical engineers, students design and print 3D prototypes of pressure sensors that measure the pressure of the eyes of people diagnosed with glaucoma. After completing the tasks within the associated lesson, students conduct research on pressure gauges, apply their understanding of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and its components, iterate their designs to make improvements, and use 3D software to design and print 3D prototypes. After successful 3D printing, teams present their models to their peers. If a 3D printer is not available, use alternate fabrication materials such as modeling clay, or end the activity once the designs are complete.

JCSH Positive Mental Health Toolkit
Rating
0.0 stars

his toolkit has been designed to promote positive mental health practices and perspectives within the school environment. The toolkit was developed for the Pan- Canadian Joint Consortium for School Health by Dr. Patricia Peterson and Dr. Bill Morrison of the University of New Brunswick. The JCSH wishes to acknowledge the many professionals from each Canadian province and territory who provided assistance by participating as key informants and reviewers.

In the second edition of the Positive Mental Health Toolkit, the resource has been divided into a series of online modules, presenting information and materials that are manageable and user friendly. It is not necessary that you implement all modules of the PMH Toolkit or that you complete them in the sequence they are presented. We encourage you to take the time to explore each module and its written and video components. The toolkit has been updated to reflect recent Canadian research, and to identify promising practices occurring in diverse contexts across the country. In addition, the PMH Toolkit provides a means of measuring positive mental health practices, with results generating a series of individualized strategies for enhancing healthy school environments for students, educators and staff members. These assessment measures can be used in conjunction with the JCSH Healthy School Planner as a means of evaluating overall school environments.
The Positive Mental Health Toolkit consists of five modules:

• Module 1: Introduction to Positive Mental Health

• Module 2: School Connectedness

• Module 3: Resiliency in School Environments

• Module 4: School Team Relationships

• Module 5: Assessing Comprehensive School Health

Kids Boost Immunity (Programme d'études, compétences, leçons)
Rating
0.0 stars

Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell (Videos with Optimistic Nihilism)
Rating

Animation videos explaining things with optimistic nihilism.

They do take a unique approach to some topics so I strongly suggest you preview videos yourself before using them with students. E.g., Smoking is Awesome (this goes through why it makes us feel so good before fully explaining the havoc it puts bodies through!)

There is a lot to ponder and learn from this site!

These videos would be great to use for debate.

Students learn about how biomedical engineers create assistive devices for persons with fine motor skill disabilities. They learn about types of forces, balanced and unbalanced forces, and the relationship between form and function, as well as the structure of the hand. They do this by designing, building and testing their own hand "gripper" prototypes that are able to grasp and lift a 200 ml cup of sand.
