Empowering Young Learners in a Warming World 3-6 was developed to support teachers in approaching climate change in an age-appropriate way with young students. This resource is a comprehensive guide to climate change education with five different chapters. Each chapter below consists of 3-4 guided inquiries to help bring climate change learning to your young learners.

Each inquiry theme below will begin by presenting background information for teachers about the specific subject matter concerning climate change and give an overview of the associated risks and trends. This guide provides educators with a blend of quality content (resources, videos, books, websites and ideas) and exemplary pedagogy to guide students through an inquiry-driven approach to climate change learning.

This unit consists of five lessons and is recommended for grades 5-8.  The five lessons consist of:The Cat's Out of the Bag - students investigate the morphology, physical characteristics, and physical adaptations of four cat speciesMountain Mixer - students participate in a role playing, systems thinking activity to understand the relationships among species before constructing a food webIt Takes All Kinds of People - students participate in a town hall meeting in an effort to reach a concensus regarding conservation plansWhat's the Plan? - students explore the emerging issues through simulation activitiesTaking Action - students are led through a service-learning project of their choosing to raise money to donate*Planet earth videos referenced in the activities are available on YouTube.

This unit plan overview provides links to all lessons along with links to accompanying teacher support materials that include: video links, student worksheets and answer guides for individual lessons, Inquiry activities with support materials for 5 lessons on climate change and how we can work towards slowing its progress. Also includes the inquiry lesson of developing a student's own action plan.

Give a 5 question mixed review quiz to students every Friday.The questions can focus on current learning, but should also include questions from the entire year (especially concepts needed for next week's lessons, or foundational items that need to be mastered). This strategy will help develop mastery, provide opportunities for mixed practice to ensure comprehension beyond specific learning content.  

Student collaborated together and discussed the idea of flashmobs – what they were, where they occur, why they occur, how they relate to pop culture. We utilized You Tube so that students could see these in action and garner ideas for their own which was the end goal.

Making time in our busy days to mindfully unwind can help. Tense and Release is one of our favorite relaxation exercises to do just this. By consciously tensing and releasing our bodies, we are able to tune out what is going on outside and tune in to what’s going on inside. And in tune, consciously let go of the tension and stress we carry.

This writing continuum was created by Kenaston School (Nicole Duley and Cindy Menzies). It has taken the writing outcomes for Grades K-8 and organized them in a scope and sequence. The Critical Thinking and Evaluating Information lessons on Kids Boost Immunity are aligned with multiple subjects within the Saskatchewan curriculum. These lessons provide examples of how misinformation can sway opinion, often by creating a sense of fear. A checklist evaluation method enables student to assess the trustworthiness of information sources. Other evaluation strategies include learning how to recognize personal bias and using a scientific approach to test ideas. For older grades there are lessons in designing experiments, creating a working hypotheses, exploring biases, and understanding correlation versus causation.
