Students will examine and understand the potential of online collective fundraising (e.g. Kickstarter, GoFundMe, IdieGoGo) and it’s potential impact on alternative sources of energy (Gravity, Electricity, Wind Energy). The example that I will show them is called the Gravity Light. It uses the principle of conservation of energy to convert gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy and then into electrical energy. Students will then do some research on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and/or GoFundMe to find an alternative source of energy that is in development and awaiting funding.
Students will look at areas including potential impact to the environment, potential impact to the economy, barriers to success, alternative ideas that they have thought of because of doing this research, amount of money that can be made from this project, etc.

Students can practice matching words to the correct definition, and donate rice at the same time.

For each correct answer, the United Nations World Food Programme donates 10 grains of rice to a country in need. How’s that for combining word learning with social goodness? When a student plays, there is a visual display of rice (see image) which is added to a bowl each time the student makes a correct response.

Free Rice includes subject area lists in Geography, Science, Math, and others. It is leveled so students can play at just the right level of challenge for them.

The scope of the site is such that subjects such as arts and music, English language arts, and biology are options along with -ology topics that one would expect to find in a site from National Geographic. First Nations University has developed a new science teaching resource called the National Science Laboratory Video Lessons for Indigenous Youth. The resource includes a variety of materials that bring together Indigenous knowledge and modern science, such as interviews with elders and knowledge keepers, laboratory manuals, and videos of lab experiments completed by students at Carlton Comprehensive High School in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

FNU professor and project lead Arzu Sardarli explained that Indigenous knowledge on topics such as heat retention in teepees can be explained using the laws of physics and applied toward house construction today. "It's important not only for Indigenous students, it's very helpful for any student and I hope what we created within this project will be used by mainstream schools, too,” said Sardarli.

The educational materials developed include interviews with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and laboratory manuals and videos for high school Biology, Chemistry and Physics classes.

Newsela provides high-interest, printable news articles from a wide range of subject areas. Teachers can adjust the reading level of news articles to meet the needs of students. Within each article, power words are identified. Students can click on these and see the definition in student-friendly language. Newsela also provides writing prompts and questions about the articles. You can sign up for free access to the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although the site is American, there are lots of applicable news stories that align with Saskatchewan curricula and context.
