Introducing Esti-Mysteries! Each image invites students to wonder what number is represented by the image. As you click through the each Esti-Mystery, clues will appear that will allow the students to use math concepts to narrow the set of possibilities to a small set of numbers. In the end, the students will need to call upon their estimation skills to solve the mystery and find the missing number.

ESTIMATION 180 is a place for both students and teachers to enjoy making sense of math and develop their number sense together. Pick from over 200 visual estimation tasks that invite all your students to be part of rich math conversations and learning.

Each task begins with a question where student must analyze the evidence in the photo to answer the question. It provides lots of success for students who have different levels of thinking, and allows them to succeed even without getting the correct answer.

Give a 5 question mixed review quiz to students every Friday.The questions can focus on current learning, but should also include questions from the entire year (especially concepts needed for next week's lessons, or foundational items that need to be mastered). This strategy will help develop mastery, provide opportunities for mixed practice to ensure comprehension beyond specific learning content.

This project is best completed prior to reading the novel, Mistasiniy:  Buffalo Rubbing Stone by Mary Harelkin Bishop to avoid influence of references in the text.  The original size of the Lake Diefenbaker mistasiniy is introduced in the novel's preface, while the size of the mistasiniy on Danny’s family’s land is mentioned on page 109 as part of Rose’s diary.   Students will work individually on a math inquiry problem challenging students to solve questions using estimation, approximations, geometry, analytical thinking, creative thinking, communication, and technology skills. This novel study was completed by embedding the principles of structured literacy with reading and writing activities for both sides of Scarborough's Reading Rope.  The ELA is a guide to personalize based upon the needs of your students.
