Animating Media Literacy

We know that the everyday lives of our students are inundated with media. This often-overwhelming menu of media-rich entrées gets served up at a rate that seems to value overconsumption more than proper and meaningful digestion. As educators, we may be left wondering, how do we beef up (or tofu up , if you prefer) our students’ appetites for media-literacy so that they can skillfully navigate our ever-changing, media-saturated landscape?

Canada at War Series

The seminal Canada at War documentary film series was first broadcast on the CBC on April 3, 1962. Its 13 half-hour episodes were culled from more than 14,000,000 feet of film, mostly shot by Canadian Army cameramen during the Second World War but also including footage shot by German and British film crews. It took a team of editors three years to put the series together under the supervision of documentary filmmaker extraordinaire Donald Britain (who also wrote the commentary). It remains, to this day, one of the most important works on the Second World War.

With the help of an “eye in the sky” and some savvy scuba surveyors, researchers are estimating the number of herring in the water... by counting their eggs! But modern methods can only tell us so much. To get the full picture, we turn to the people who know the herring best. If you like this content you can see all of the available resources in the Harvest module in the Ocean School Help Centre (https://help.oceanschool.nfb.ca/educational-resources/module-guides/the-harvest-module-guide). >> Activity Description | 5 minutes'Herring census' - Stock assessment survey: Students are challenged to determine which herring stock will most likely have a healthy population in the future! Indigenous concept of c̓isḷa - short video and student activity
Rating
0.0 stars

>> Media Description | 5 minutes
For millennia, the Haíɫzaqv have depended on the seasonal cycles that bring ocean resources to the coast. Every generation learns to harvest in a sustainable way. But now these resources are dwindling. And it's up to us—all of us—to work together to put things back in balance. If you like this content you can see all of the available resources in the Harvest module in the Ocean School Help Centre (https://help.oceanschool.nfb.ca/educational-resources/module-guides/the-harvest-module-guide).

>> Activity Description | 45 minutes
Balancing act "c̓isḷa" comic activity. Students learn more about c̓isḷa—the act of looking after and taking care of something important. Students then create a comic that illustrates people taking care of and giving back to nature.
