Changing ocean chemistry could have a disastrous impact on shellfish and fisheries in Puget Sound. The Suquamish Tribe is working with partners to inform the public about this problem while they elicit support for research and monitoring the issue.
Students use a table-top-sized tsunami generator to observe the formation and devastation of a tsunami. They see how a tsunami moves across the ocean and what happens when it reaches the continental shelf. Students make villages of model houses and buildings to test how different material types are impacted by the huge waves. They further discuss how engineers design buildings to survive tsunamis. Much of this activity setup is the same as for the Mini-Landscape activity in Lesson 4 of the Natural Disasters unit.
After completing a pre-assessment survey of their knowledge of electricity, students compare how much energy different types of light bulbs use and relate these to their monthly power bill. They then evaluate the short term economic and carbon footprint aspects of the energy alternatives available.
Students will speak knowledgeably about the current state of biodiversity on Earth, creativity represent their learning through a variety of activities and effectively inform and inspire their peers about the importance of protecting our environment.
How do our everyday actions contribute to our ecological footprint? Can we change our individual actions to be more environmentally friendly and create a more sustainable lifestyle? In this lesson, students will evaluate their own environmental impact using an online tool called Your Plan, Your Planet, and evaluate simple ways to reduce their ecological footprint as an individual or community.

There is a very simple way for you to make a positive impact on the health of our oceans and fish populations, and that is to choose sustainable seafood. This does not mean choosing between farmed fish or wild caught fish – there is much more involved than that. Learn about the different methods of fishing and understand the story of how the seafood reaches our plate. Every human, no matter where you are in the world, as both a positive and negative impact on the ocean. Exploring this story map helps us understand how our little choices can make a big impact.

The program was originally written to connect with Grade 8 curriculum but is easily adaptable and connects to concepts in grades 6-12."

In this issue’s lesson, students exercise their observation skills to do some of the actual work of marine biologists who study the endangered North Atlantic right whale. They identify an individual whale by examining photographs taken at sea. They then examine a record of sighting of the whale in order to track its movements.
TeacherTube is a free platform that allows teachers to share video lectures and various resources, including tutorials, lesson plans, and notes. Users can also attach assessments and learning activities, explore content created by other educators, and connect with colleagues who have similar interests.
Students learn about wind as a source of renewable energy and explore the advantages and disadvantages wind turbines and wind farms. They also learn about the effectiveness of wind turbines in varying weather conditions and how engineers work to create wind power that is cheaper, more reliable and safer for wildlife.
Prior to reaching households, water is exposed to a variety of treatments designed to render it fit for human consumption and use. One of the first treatment steps is the removal of suspended solids using chemical additives called flocculants. In this activity, students learn about two commonly used flocculants and clean water collected from a local pond or river. They experiment with flocculant, stirring and pH variables.
Ground water must be able to move through underground materials at rates fast enough to supply useful amounts of water to wells or springs in order for those materials to be classified as an aquifer. For water to move in an aquifer, some of the pores and fractures must be connected to each other. Water moves through different materials at different rates, faster through gravel, slower through sand, and even slower through clay. Gravels and sands are possible aquifers; clays usually are not aquifers. The following activity demonstrates how different sizes of rock materials that make up an aquifer affect water movement.
In this activity, students will review and evaluate the ways land is covered and used in their local community. They will also consider the environmental effects of the different types of land use. Students will act as community planning engineers to determine where to place a new structure that will have the least effect on the environment.
