Aboriginal Literatures in Canada: A Teacher’s Resource Guide serves a double purpose: to encourage the teaching of Aboriginal literature in English high school curricula across the country because Aboriginal students deserve to be taught texts they can relate to and, because non-Aboriginal students should be educated about Aboriginal culture, history and contemporary life through the richness of Aboriginal writing with its innovative uses of the English language. Various works of Aboriginal literature are included.

Bookopolis is a social network for kids that lets them log books and connect with other readers gr 1-8+. By creating an account, students create a virtual bookshelf and join a community of young readers who can discover new books, share book reviews and track their reading with a digital reading log. The site offers book recommendations ("Bookopolis Picks" and "What's Popular Right Now"), the opportunity to explore book reviews by other young readers, a featured book of the week, the opportunity to earn points and badges, plus the option to find books by grade (1-3, 3-6, 6-8, 8-12). You can sign in as an educator, a student or a parent. Choose the online version or download the app from your app store.

Canadian art is a door to learning about a wide range of subjects.

The Art Canada Institute teacher resource guides presented here offer students the opportunity to study a multitude of subjects—from environmental awareness to activism, social justice to gender studies, politics to computer science (to name a few)—through the art and artists who have defined this country’s visual culture.

Following our provinces’ education curricula, the teacher resource guides provide multidisciplinary learning activities that reveal how Canadian art powerfully reflects our world so we can better understand it.

Teacher Read Aloud or Class novel study

WHAT IS IT?
The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible. Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be. Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible. The scope and depth of the project is up to you. While there are commonly used such as Skype, Twitter, Padlet, or Flipgrid, you choose the tools that will make the most sense for you. Teachers get a community of other educators to do a global project with, hopefully inspiring them to continue these connections through the year.

WHEN IS IT?
Once a year, starting in early October and running through mid-November. Due to the time commitment, this is only a once a year project, however, two fantastic spin-off projects run at other times; the New Zealand Read Aloud and the French version of GRA, Ecouter Lire le Monde.

The Legacy of Hope Foundation is a very comprehensive site that offers lots of great resources that help to promote healing and Reconciliation in Canada. The Legacy of Hope Foundation's (LHF) goal is to educate and raise awareness about the history and existing intergenerational impacts of the Residential School System (RSS) and subsequent Sixties Scoop (SS) on Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) Survivors, their descendants, and their communities to promote healing and Reconciliation.Check out each of the sections to see the great resources they have to offer. 

Libby, by Overdrive is a books app that allows kids to browse and borrow ebooks and audiobooks from public libraries for free. Kids will need a library card to download or stream the books they want to borrow. The app connects users to their local library's ebook and audiobook collection. Users can link multiple library cards from different branches to access a wider collection. Kids can sample books before deciding to borrow them. If they're not immediately available, they can put titles on hold, and the activity tracker lets them track what they've read. Search for a specific title or explore different collections, including Kids, Teens, What's Popular?, and Subjects. Little kids can access picture books with read-along audio, making some books more accessible to early readers. Even though Libby, by Overdrive gives users access to a wide range of books, grown-ups can activate a juvenile or young adult filter in order to limit kids' access to the entire collection.

Films on this site can be streamed free of charge, or downloaded for your personal use for a small fee. We also offer educational works on a subscription basis to schools and institutions.

Our Collection includes documentaries, animations, experimental films, fiction and interactive works. We showcase films that take a stand on issues of global importance that matter to Canadians—stories about the environment, human rights, international conflict, the arts and more.

Newsela provides high-interest, printable news articles from a wide range of subject areas. Teachers can adjust the reading level of news articles to meet the needs of students. Within each article, power words are identified. Students can click on these and see the definition in student-friendly language. Newsela also provides writing prompts and questions about the articles. You can sign up for free access to the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although the site is American, there are lots of applicable news stories that align with Saskatchewan curricula and context.

Links are also provided to other materials like videos and other suggested resources. 

library2go helps keep students reading. Students can access ebooks and audiobooks from the provincial library system if they have a library card. This is an opportune time for students to develop fluency and stamina for reading independently. Invite them to explore titles in different genres and to find nonfiction titles that build on their interests. If students don’t have a library card, they can check out their regional library’s membership tab. Many libraries have an online application option so that students can gain a temporary library card number to borrow materials
