Canadian art is a door to learning about a wide range of subjects.

The Art Canada Institute teacher resource guides presented here offer students the opportunity to study a multitude of subjects—from environmental awareness to activism, social justice to gender studies, politics to computer science (to name a few)—through the art and artists who have defined this country’s visual culture.

Following our provinces’ education curricula, the teacher resource guides provide multidisciplinary learning activities that reveal how Canadian art powerfully reflects our world so we can better understand it.

Students can practice matching words to the correct definition, and donate rice at the same time.

For each correct answer, the United Nations World Food Programme donates 10 grains of rice to a country in need. How’s that for combining word learning with social goodness? When a student plays, there is a visual display of rice (see image) which is added to a bowl each time the student makes a correct response.

Free Rice includes subject area lists in Geography, Science, Math, and others. It is leveled so students can play at just the right level of challenge for them.

This is a great resource! It is a geography-based game - and a whole lot of fun!

"GeoGuessr is a web-based geographic discovery game designed by Anton Wallén, a Swedish IT consultant, released on 9 May 2013. The game uses a semi-randomized Google Street View location for paying members and Mapillary for non-members. The new website for the Heritage Fairs (& High School Heritage Challenge) is now live and ready to accept project submissions for the Virtual Heritage Fair (grades 4-8) and the High School Heritage Challenge (grades 9-12)!

The Heritage Fair program provides the opportunity for students and their families, teachers and communities to learn about diverse Living Heritage projects.

There is still lots of time to prepare and submit a project to these contests, as the deadline is Monday, April 24. The online contests are open to all students in Saskatchewan.

Links to register and submit projects are on the homepage, as well as available in the dropdown menus for each respective contest.

Be sure to check out the Heritage Fairs toolkit that will give you topic inspiration, a list of popular research sources, and a detailed breakdown on how to create your presentation and share your findings. The toolkit is available in both English and French.

Métis culture will continue to be lived and celebrated when we pass our knowledge on to the generations who follow us.
Everyone is on a learning journey. While exploring historical and contemporary Métis ways of knowing and doing, these learning packages provide knowledge and understanding for students and teachers. Films on this site can be streamed free of charge, or downloaded for your personal use for a small fee. We also offer educational works on a subscription basis to schools and institutions.

This site has resources for grades K-higher education and the breadth of the resources available cover a wide variety of activities, interactive material, mapping (of course), and guides for instructors. The scope of the site is such that subjects such as arts and music, English language arts, and biology are options along with -ology topics that one would expect to find in a site from National Geographic. The indexing of the site by grades, content types, and subjects allow easy searching through the website." (AASL)

Newsela provides high-interest, printable news articles from a wide range of subject areas. Teachers can adjust the reading level of news articles to meet the needs of students. Within each article, power words are identified. Students can click on these and see the definition in student-friendly language. Newsela also provides writing prompts and questions about the articles. You can sign up for free access to the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although the site is American, there are lots of applicable news stories that align with Saskatchewan curricula and context.

PBS has created and shared tons of media rich, engaging, digital lessons for a wide range of grade levels and subject areas.
