Parent Resources

This is a collection of resources that parents may find useful.

Please note that ANY resources in The Sun West Resource Bank can be useful to parents as well.  Items in this collection have been specifically marked as higher interest to parents.

If parents are searching for resources to support their child with his or her learning, they should complete the search.  If they wish to, parents can use the filters on the left side of the screen and select "Primary User" and "Parent" to narrow their search if need.

If you find there are too many resources to sort through, you can filter the results using the “Filter Resources” area on the left side of the screen.  Select “Education Level” to narrow your results to a specific education level.   (Please note - for the purposes of this site these "Education Levels" are used when filtering - Lower Primary = K-2, Upper Primary=3-5, Middle Years=6-8, High School=9-12).

You can also filter the results using the “Filter Resources” area on the left side of the screen.  Select “Subject Area” to narrow your results to a specific subject.

For the Love of Reading
Rating
0.0 stars

This resource is for anyone who works with and cares for young children. The word “parent” is inclusive of all those who contribute to the development and lifelong learning of children.
Remember that no two children are alike. No two parents are alike. Your child will learn and grow at his own pace.
Parents are a child’s most important teachers. As your child’s first teacher, you can provide opportunities that will give your child a love of reading. Read to your child every day. Let your child see you reading.
This booklet gives a few suggestions on how to help your child discover the love of reading. It also lets you as a parent know why you are so important in the life of your child.

Free Rice - Learn and Feed the Hungry!
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

Students can practice matching words to the correct definition, and donate rice at the same time.

For each correct answer, the United Nations World Food Programme donates 10 grains of rice to a country in need. How’s that for combining word learning with social goodness? When a student plays, there is a visual display of rice (see image) which is added to a bowl each time the student makes a correct response.

Free Rice includes subject area lists in Geography, Science, Math, and others. It is leveled so students can play at just the right level of challenge for them.

Gr. 1 Phonological Awareness - Info & Weekly Videos
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Phonological awareness skills are important in order to develop good reading and spelling skills. Having good phonological awareness skills means that a child is able to manipulate sounds and words, or “play” with sounds and words. For example, you might ask your child to break the word “cat” into individual sounds: “c-a-t.” Important: These skills deal with SOUNDS not letters. For example, /t/ represents the sound and not the letter name “tee.” You will not use any written or visual letters when working with phonological activities. These activities are done with listening and speaking only. Learning the letter names and their corresponding sounds is also very important but should be taught and practiced at a different time of the day. This resource will have a weekly activity for your to work on with your child/student(s). It will include a handout with information and guidance, as well as a video to help support you and the learner.
