Students are introduced to the multidisciplinary field of material science. Through a class demo and PowerPoint® presentation, they learn the basic classes of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites) and how they differ from one another, considering concepts such as stress, strain, ductile, brittle, deformation and fracture. Practical examples help students understand how the materials are applied, and further information about specific research illustrates how materials and material science are useful in space exploration. A worksheet and quiz are provided.

Almost all Anatomy and Physiology course require the student have a basic level of chemistry knowledge. Lesson 02 Chemistry covers the basics of inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and nutrition that most A&P student need to make it through the course.

Keep in mind that each of these topics takes about a year of college to gain a better understanding; this video series is just a quick survey to get you up to speed.

After a review of the concepts learned, students will design their own flying machine based on their knowledge of the forces involved in flight, the properties of available materials, and the ways in which their flying machine could benefit society. Students will also learn how the brainstorming process helps in creative thinking and inventing and that scientists and engineers use this technique to come up with new products or modify and improve exiting products.

All of these layers can become overwhelming if only considered from the perspective of teaching these elements in silos. GAP or Grade Alike Planning in Sun West has offered opportunities to teachers to reimagine these elements by infusing them together. The GAP Infusion Poster illustrates a visual of this philosophy where many elements are blended thoughtfully together to meet many learning outcomes, provide many opportunities, and give students' voice and choice in their learning by exploring their interests and learning needs.
