CIVIX Canada
Rating
0.0 stars

Our approach to civic education is about providing opportunities for students to experience their democracy first-hand rather than by reading about it in a textbook. By reaching students throughout their school career, during and between election periods, we hope to prepare them to be responsible and informed citizens.

CIVIX programming focuses on the themes of elections, government budgets, elected representatives and digital media literacy. Programs available include:

(1) Student Vote - an election enables teachers to bring democracy alive in the classroom

(2) Student Budget Consultation - combines civic education and financial literacy

(3) Rep Day - connects students with their elected representatives for a virtual or in-person meeting

(4) CTRL-F - a module providing quick strategies students can use to investigate and evaluate information

(5) PoliTalks - supports educators in bringing political discussions to the classroom - Materials are free with
registration, and programming is designed for grades 5-12

(6) Democracy Bootcamp - professional development conference for teachers designed to improve their
democratic engagement and delivery of CIVIX programming

Canada at War Series
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

The seminal Canada at War documentary film series was first broadcast on the CBC on April 3, 1962. Its 13 half-hour episodes were culled from more than 14,000,000 feet of film, mostly shot by Canadian Army cameramen during the Second World War but also including footage shot by German and British film crews. It took a team of editors three years to put the series together under the supervision of documentary filmmaker extraordinaire Donald Britain (who also wrote the commentary). It remains, to this day, one of the most important works on the Second World War.

A Kindersley Composite School Student recently won second place in the WorkSafe Saskatchewan 2012 Youth Video Contest. The contest is an initiative by WorkSafe Saskatchewan to raise awareness and knowledge among youth about workplace health and safety issues. Students from across Saskatchewan were invited to submit an original 3-minute video on workplace safety.
A WorkSafe Saskatchewan committee adjudicated nominations based on the students’ creativity and originality in story development, production value, video effects and the video’s overall workplace health and safety message.
Grade 12 student, Vanessa Klassen took second place with her video “Life is Not a Video Game”, that was submitted by teacher Lisa Padberg. As the second place winner she receives $700 and KCS will receive $1000.00. The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board will present the student and school prizes in June.

Saskatchewan statistics indicate that youth (aged 15-24) are 20 per cent to 30 per cent more likely to have an injury than workers of any other age are. WorkSafe Saskatchewan’s youth strategy is to educate and influence the health and safety beliefs and behaviours of youth to achieve a reduction in injuries.
2013 video contest information will be available in August.
