This multi-disciplinary resource features ten engaging lessons that focus on biodiversity and invasive species. An ecosystem approach provides an authentic context to help students understand what invasive species are and how these plants and animals can significantly impact the vital interdependence of organisms within habitats. Although developed to support the Grade 6 Life Sciences curriculum (Ontario), the strong English Language Arts, Math and Social Studies links make this resource applicable across a broad range of subject areas and grade levels.
In a combination of in-class and outdoor activities students will:
- Define and explore types of invasive species. - Identify how organisms interact within ecosystems. - Respond to media information about invasive species. - Explore a local habitat to find and catalogue native and non-native species. - Initiate action to inform the community about the prevention of the spread of invasive species.

This resource aims to support educators, school administrators, and community members facilitate more culture-based learning on the land. It was created by four Dene and Metis education resource developers, hired by the Dene Nation in summer 2020.
The lessons in this document can be used as stand-alone activities to bring more cultural learning into classrooms and to get students learning outdoors during the regular school day. However, in order for students to build deeper connections with the land, culture and language, the ideal practice would be to bring them out on the land for more extended experiences. The lessons in this document can be used as part of multi-day culture camps, for example, or other outdoor excursions.
The “Camp Logistics” section of this document aims to facilitate this type of extended on-the-land learning. It provides sample gear lists, safety protocol suggestions for organizing a camp. Section A of the appendix also includes sample schedules or organization materials to help with this.
Lessons in this document can be used as starting points for a whole week of activities on the land, for example. Since each community is different, we encourage educators to reach out to cultural knowledge holders in their own community, to explore other activities that would connect with the ones described here. For example, the lessons on Labrador tea and sweetgrass in this document could turn into a week-long medicine camp, in which students learn about the protocol around harvesting and processing several different types of plant medicines with the guidance of local Elders.

Do you want your class to be part of Canada’s Space program?
With the Lunar Rover Research Challenge, students could control a Canadensys rover in a mock-lunar environment by winning this low-prep, high-impact competition. Canadensys recently received a contract from the Canadian Space Agency to send a rover to the moon as early as 2026.
You can do the project in 3-4 hours for a classroom experience or 6+ hours to compete.

Win the chance for your class to operate a Lunar Rover in a simulated mission. There will be Canadian rovers on the Moon by the end of this decade. Let’s Talk Science, Canadensys Aerospace, and Avalon Space have teamed up to give Canadian youth in Grades 6-9 the opportunity to learn about rover technology and how to plan missions on the Moon.
The Lunar Rover Research Challenge invites teams of students to pitch their mission plans for the chance to remotely operate a Canadensys rover in a lunar-like environment.
Welcome to the Lunar Rover Research Challenge!
The challenge is for students to design a rover mission to find frozen water at the South Pole of the Moon. The activity is structured as a collaborative board game or digital game where students are guided through the design process. They equip their rover with scientific instruments, choose a target, then determine where to take measurements.
The experience is designed around 5 lessons:
1: Learn about Canada’s role in the upcoming lunar missions and the benefits of space exploration to life on Earth 2: Review the mission brief and learn how to plan a rover mission on the Moon 3: Plan the mission using an iterative design process scaffolded as a collaborative board game 4: Communicate ideas and prepare for submission 5: Reflect on the team’s experience and the impact of space exploration on society
Set in the context of space exploration, this project develops students’ design thinking, teamwork, and communication skills. Students must design their research mission by considering pros and cons, and weighing risks and rewards.
This challenge can be completed without a submission to the competition.

We all know there are some big decisions coming up on Tuesday. Kid President walks you through some good (and bad) ways to make BIG decisions.
This inspiring video can be used with students as a prompt to discuss the decisions they have made in the past, as well as ones they may be grappling with right now.
Students could reflect on an example of each time they've used the strategies presented and if they were effective or not.
