With a focus on experiential learning, Brock University students worked collaboratively with Niagara Catholic District School Board teachers to develop engaging, coding-based activities for students that were explicitly or implicitly about mathematics. BBC lesson series on Computational Thinking. This series would be a good resource for teachers, and older students. The lesson provide some information, a video clip, and each section in the series has a quiz at the end to check understanding. The start of the topic is broken down into the sections of computational thinking: Decomposition, Pattern Recognition, Abstraction and Algorithms.

Computer Linguist - Celebrate programmers by going on a Tynker coding adventure!

"The Day of the Programmer is celebrated on the 256th day of the year. This is because programmers are familiar with bytes and 1 byte = 8 bits, which gives 256 (2 to the power of 8) different combinations of binary digits. In this lesson, students can celebrate programmers by creating art that showcases different programming languages! Students are provided a step-by-step tutorial, code blocks, and instructions to create a Computer Linguist project using Tynker. By the end of this lesson, students will have combined creativity and coding concepts such as simple motion, simple drawing, basic math, and input/output."

You can complete this task by using Tynker block coding - or click in the bottom right corner of the screen to use JavaScript.

This is a great activity to learn about programming languages.

Over the course of these lessons, you and your students will learn about and plan a mission to Mars. Your students will apply their creativity and science and math knowledge to explore the Red Planet. Not a scientist or engineer? That's okay! You're going to learn everything you need to know while preparing for and conducting these lessons. And you actually already have some engineering skills, whether you know it or not.

In this unit, students learn about Mars, design a mission to explore the planet, build and test model spacecraft and components, and engage in scientific exploration. The unit takes students through seven stages, including learning about the planet, planning the mission, designing the spacecraft, launching, landing, surface operations, and sample handling.

Teachers understand that there are many layers of content, outcomes, skills, and experiences that our students require throughout their educational journey to become competent 21st century learners. Teachers have must dos, such as curricular outcomes and assessment, but there are also many additional elements to provide enrichment to learning for students. All of these layers can become overwhelming if only considered from the perspective of teaching these elements in silos. GAP or Grade Alike Planning in Sun West has offered opportunities to teachers to reimagine these elements by infusing them together. The GAP Infusion Poster illustrates a visual of this philosophy where many elements are blended thoughtfully together to meet many learning outcomes, provide many opportunities, and give students' voice and choice in their learning by exploring their interests and learning needs.
